Coventry is a highly student-friendly place to explore that makes getting around affordable and simple - especially if you're new to the area!
Here's a guide to save you time and money when travelling around the city.
Walking and Cycling 🚴
The city centre is exceptionally flat and mostly pedestrianised, meaning your own two feet are often the fastest way to travel between, lectures, housing and local shops.
- Walking Times: You can easily walk from Coventry Railway Station to the main campus in 15 to 20 minutes.
- Lime e-bikes: If you don't own a bike, you can use Lime. These green bikes are widely scattered across the city. Download the Lime app and unlock a pedal bike or e-scooter.
Bus Travel 🚌
Buses are the backbone of student travel, especially for those living slightly outside the centre.
- Student Routes: National Express Coventry and Stagecoach Midlands are the main networks. The 12X express bus runs from Pool Meadow Bus Station, while other popular student lines, like the 9 and 11, connect to popular student housing areas.
Students can use a Swift card for discounted travel on National Express Coventry! To be eligible for a card, you must:
- Be aged 18 or older
- Be in full-time education
- Carry a physical student ID while travelling
A Student Coventry Bus 4-Week Ticket costs £56 and provides unlimited travel across the local area.
Term-length student passes are also available via NX Coventry Student Tickets.
Always carry your physical university photo ID card when using student passes!
Rail Travel 🚂
Coventry is perfectly placed in the heart of England, making it incredibly straightforward to explore neighbouring cities or travel back home.
- Travel Times: Direct trains from Coventry Railway Station reach Birmingham New Street in 20 to 25 minutes, Birmingham International Airport in 15 minutes, and London Euston in just 1 hour.
- 16-25 Railcard: A non-negotiable for students. For a £30 annual fee, a 16-25 Railcard will save you 1/3 off standard train fares anywhere in the UK. You can easily purchase it online via National Rail.
